The Mysteries of Rúne - The Duality of Neverrest
Nestled within a crevasse between two mighty mountains lies the city of two lives, the day and the night. During the 500-year war, the dwarves of Sgian had to work around the clock to defend their city from invading armies. The ones responsible for maintaining the city's infrastructure and defenses forged life in the sunlight. The other took over the watch and guarded the city at night.
Sgian is known to outsiders as the City of Neverrest, as many outsiders believe that the inhabitants never sleep. Overall, Sgian is a city of contrasts, where the dwarves have learned to balance their love for work and play. Their heritage is integral to their culture, and they take great pride in their city, people, and traditions.
They have established an extensive network of merchants in Sgian. Most of these shops, of course, are closed around noon and midnight and open around the Times of Crossing. This is the period of evening and morning when the entire city is awake. This also leads to specialized shops only being open during their respective crests. This has created a split between the Breakers and the Twili. Most are accustomed to the constant noise of the city as there are no spaces of quiet within the great crevasse.

- Breakers -
The day now focuses on crafting and trade, building the city's economy by selling their wares to visitors and neighboring towns. Those who pertain to the light hours refer to themselves as daybreakers or breakers. They aren't too keen on change as they try to maintain the traditions of the pre-war city.
They sneer at the name Neverrest and eat meals of aged meats and hearty ales. They often maintain the farms along the surface and are brash to outsiders. They have also recently found a way to refine black powder, which they have used to create what they are referring to as Boom Breakers. This hand-held weapon is primarily used for protecting their flocks and farms, and many of the Twili have taken to modifying these instruments and adding decorative adornments.
- Twili -
The night still maintains its defensive postures, but they have also developed a love for storytelling, music, and dance. They have dubbed themselves the Twilight Dwellers or Twili for short. The Twili culture that emerged after the war revolves heavily around grand wonder. Many gather in underground taverns, where they enjoy hearty meals, fruity ales, and the tales of the ancients. Many Twili share stories of the various cultures of The Onyx Territories to various degrees of accuracy and have crafted many wonders of architecture around the city.
- The Duality -
The dwarves of Neverrest appoint two representatives known as the Dawn and the Dusk, each holding the responsibility of crossing the cultural divide. They are known as the Duality, and they must each take opposing day and night shifts ruling and adjusting decrees. They hold office for four years at a two-year offset.

They each hold a seat in Revelry Hall but are rarely in their quarters. At best, they rule in tandem, pushing and pulling like the tides. At worst, they are constantly changing laws and making orders to re-write those of the other. Either way, it keeps the peace between them, for the most part.

The most prominent landmarks are the Great Mines surrounded by the quarry’s edge, the source of the dwarves' wealth and industry. The mine is a vast network of tunnels and caverns that wind deep into the mountain and are home to precious metals, gemstones, and other valuable resources. The mining of these cavers has held a clean split as the Breakers tend to mine the more raw materials and the Twili refine them; this has pushed industrialization as each side pushes the boundaries in shifts.
The main entrance to Sgian is the Iron Gate. Its craftsmanship is known throughout the realm for its strength and durability. It's a symbol of the great history of the dwarves and is loved by each side.
In the heart of Sgian is Revelry Hall. A grand hall where the dwarves gather to honor their fallen brothers and sisters. On the walls hang beautiful tapestries depicting conquest and glory.
The Dwellers' Depths is what lies beyond the lowest homestead of Sgian. This has been closed off due to the beasts of the pit known as the dwellers. These wolf-drakes are unwieldy beasts that howl at all hours of the day. The first Dawn and Dusk were known as the fang riders and led many battles in the 500-year war. These two mark the symbol of the great city. The major sword marked the god Cath, and the two lesser swords marked Dawn and Dusk.
