The Mysteries of Rúne - Onyx Shards

Magic

Scattered deposits of black crystals, known as Onyx, are found across the territories. Onyx emanates erratic power that many attempts to harness. Onyx has been harnessed to create objects from skyships to floating orbs of light. Onyx crystals are very fragile and the process of harnessing it's power can be very dangerous. The larger intact crystals yield greater magical power, but harvesting them can come at a cost. Cave-ins are regular when mining Onyx, something that wakes the monsters that grow near and around these sites.

Those born near large deposits of onyx can develop innate magical abilities. Many learn about their powers by accident as they sneeze and produce a dragon-like flame, or when making music watch the notes dance off the page in front of them. These exemplify the two forms of learned magic taught in colleges across the Onyx territories. Bards produce magic through an artistic focus, and Wizardry develops through study and knowledge.

Many wild creatures have spawned from similar magic influences to those of the magic born. Many mutated creatures have arisen from various onyx deposits.

Magic is more than something gained through circumstance. Alternatively, powers are received from the Gods or bought from magic entities through pacts. Magic gained through such pacts is treasonous against the conclave.

Besides the onyx shards, strange obelisks have fallen from the ring like comets. They find rest across the continent, towering spires glimmering in the night sky. Many shifts occur around them: people suddenly acquire magical abilities, and ecosystems change overnight. Some towns are built around them as they believe the spires will bring blessings, but most are left to lie alone in remote places.

There are other crystals known as dragon lodestones. Each crystal dragon of old held various psionic powers, such as the amethyst dragon's ability of spacial manipulation. These lodestones are physical fragments of the abilities of these dragons, allowing others to harness the powers they once held.
